On offer is an irreplaceable and rare pair of handwritten manuscript books, the first being a 250 page book of spells, curses and enchantments; a true Book of Shadows by a High Priestess of Wicca, the daughter of a High Priestess and the granddaughter, great-granddaughter etc., of a High Priestesses. Hundreds of years of Wicca knowledge is handed down from the women of this witch's family line and coalesced into this vintage "grimoire" or ritual book of spells and incantations. Authored by Persephone Adrastea Eirene, her Wiccan name, 3rd degree, and as such she claimed three names, she was a true "hereditarian" American Witch of Swedish and English lineage who presided over her own coven and was the patroness and Queen-Mother of many more covens of witches for many, many years. The tradition of her line called for Persephone to copy her Mother's book by hand as a child and she was then called upon to re-write the book when she became a high priestess which dates the writing of this book in the 1960s. The book is in good+ condition and very clear and legible with no torn pages and is over an inch thick. It is 8 3/4 inches high and 6 1/4 inches wide. Pages are a just bit yellowed but it is in great shape. Chapters include Sabbaths, Laws, Circles, Spells, Astrology and Stones; there is info on gems, planets, rites, potions, even exorcisms, alchemy and much more. The serious nature of this book is as evidenced by the warning English of the first page: "To those not of the Craft - The reading of this Book is Forbidden! Proceed no further or Justice will exact a swift and terrible Retribution - you will surely suffer at the hand of the Craft." Then, below, the same is written in Theban, the ancient language of Theban witchcraft, and finally signed by the Witch in Theban also. The second book is an 8 3/4 inches high and 6 1/4 inches wide book of occult, herbalist and alchemy, chemistry recipes, cures, ceremonial perfumes and balms used in Witchcraft, even cough syrups, dyes, beauty aids, how to make hairspray, how to make incense, linaments, teas, nerve tonics and liquers. Absolutely unique. Provenance: These books had been the property of Alice Monserratt who was Israel Regardie's wife, and were purchased directly from her in the late 70`s. BIO NOTES: Online sources provide: Israel Regardie was born in London to poor Jewish immigrant parents. His family chose the surname 'Regardie' after his brother due to a mixup was enrolled in the British Army under this surname.[1] Regardie emigrated to the United States at the age of 14, and studied art in Washington, DC and Philadelphia, PA. With a Hebrew tutor he gained a linguistic knowledge which would prove invaluable in his later studies of Hermetic Qabalah. [2] With easy access to the Library of Congress, he read widely and became interested in theosophy, Hindu philosophy and yoga; he also joined the Rosicrucians at around this time.[3] After reading Part One of Book Four by the occultist Aleister Crowley, he initiated a correspondence which led to his return at 21 to the UK at Crowley's invitation to become the latter's secretary in 1928. The two men parted company four years later in 1932.[4] Two years later in 1934, he joined Stella Matutina, a successor organization of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. For it is the heritage of every man and woman--their spiritual birthright."[5] The various occult organizations claiming descent from the original Golden Dawn and the systems of magic practiced by them owe their continuing existence and popularity to Regardie's work. In 1937, at the age of 30, Regardie returned to the U.S., entering Chiropractic College in New York. In addition, he studied psychoanalysis with Dr. E. Clegg and Dr. J. L. Bendit, and psychotherapy with Dr. Nandor Fodor. He opened a chiropractic office and taught psychiatry -- Freudian, Reichian and Jungian -- retiring in 1981 at the age of 74, when he moved to Sedona, AZ.[6] He died from a heart attack in the presence of close friends during a dinner at a restaurant in Sedona, Arizona on March 10, 1985 at the age of 77..
